Macroom Bypass

Macroom Bypass

Flynn Furney Environmental Consultants Ltd performed the duties of site ecologists for the advanced fencing and clearance works in Macroom, County Cork. The route passes through a mosaic of sensitive habitats include mountainous terrain, farmland and flood plains. Pre-construction surveys were a key part of the role with badger, amphibian, invasive plant and bat surveys highlighting the great level of biodiversity in the area. Arborists and our ecologists performed endoscope surveys on a large number of trees to ensure no potential roosts were disturbed.

Key species also included the Kerry Slug Geomalacus maculosus and Pearl Mussel Margaritifera margaritifera. The implementation and monitoring of silt management in this location was critical to allowing the project to be delivered. Mitigation included an artificial sett, boxes and input to the overall ecological design. Working closely with the client, contractors and state bodies (IFI, NPWS) Flynn Furney Environmental Consultants Ltd ensured that the advanced works were delivered in a timely but environmentally sensitive manner.
